History of Almaty International Airport

Almaty International Airport's history dates back to 1923, when the first airfield was constructed on the site of what is now the Central Stadium. The airport's first flight took place in 1924, connecting Almaty with Tashkent. In 1935, the airport relocated to the eastern part of the city, initially handling limited domestic flights, primarily connecting Almaty with other major cities of the Soviet Union. As aviation expanded in the 20th century, the airport saw significant growth, including the construction of new runways and terminals.

After Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991, Almaty International Airport began its transformation into a modern international hub. As the country opened up to global markets and foreign investment, the airport saw a sharp rise in international flights. Major renovations in the 1990s and 2000s, including the construction of a new terminal, enabled the airport to accommodate an increasing number of international travelers.

In recent years, the airport has continued expanding its facilities and services, responding to the needs of a growing passenger base. It now offers a wide range of amenities, including VIP lounges, duty-free shops, restaurants, and streamlined passenger services. Almaty International Airport has also become a crucial logistics center for trade and cargo transport across the region.

In 2020, Almaty International Airport became part of TAV Airports' portfolio, a company that provides comprehensive services across various sectors of airport operations. In June 2024, marking the centennial of its first civil flight, the airport launched a new international passenger terminal, symbolizing its continued growth and modernization.
